5 Ridiculously Simple Ways to Get Rid of a Headache

Headaches can be one of the most debilitating symptoms of stress and anxiety, but luckily there are some ridiculously simple things you can do to get rid of one in 60 seconds or less. Here are 5 easy ways to beat that headache.

Focus on taking deep, full breaths for 60 seconds. This can immediately reduce pain and help your body relax by activating your parasympathetic nervous system. If you have time, close your eyes and try to clear your mind; if not, pay attention to how much more relaxed you feel once you’ve finished. Drink water: Water flushes out toxins in our bodies so it helps us eliminate headaches quicker by ridding us of substances that could potentially trigger inflammation in our brains or nervous systems. Try drinking 8-10 ounces (8oz if you’re at home or work; 10oz if you’re out on the go) with an extra glass before going to bed if possible.

When you have a headache, it's important to give your body time to rest and relax. The best way to do that is by doing some gentle stretching exercises. Don't push yourself too hard, just make sure your head stays in line with your shoulders, wrists, hands and feet so you don't feel any discomfort in your neck or spine. Hold each stretch for about 20 seconds before switching sides. Start slowly and work up over time if it feels good!

The best way to get rid of a headache is simply exercising. If you suffer from chronic headaches, it’s probably due to muscle tension. In order to eliminate pain, you need to stretch out tight muscles and exercise can do that for you in just about 60 seconds or less. Research has shown that even light physical activity (such as brisk walking) can provide quick relief from some types of headaches and exercise may be more effective than medication. There are also some natural remedies that have been known to ease pain such as apple cider vinegar and peppermint oil, but they might take more time before providing full relief. So, if you’re looking for an alternative way of treating your headache without resorting back to over-the-counter drugs or prescription medication, try exercising!

Drink Water

When you’re dehydrated, your body releases substances called vasopressin and anti-diuretic hormone. These mess with your blood pressure and give you that pounding headache. Before you reach for Advil or aspirin, try drinking 8oz. of water before bed and another glass in the morning. Your headache should be gone within 60 seconds!

Massage Your Forehead and Temples

Just about every headache—and there are many types—is caused by stress. And what calms you down faster than rubbing some pressure points on your forehead and temples? The tissue between your eyebrows, for example, is connected to nerves that run from your neck all the way up into your head. Even better: Massaging these spots doesn’t just help head pain; it also releases endorphins that decrease feelings of pain throughout your body. Give it a try next time you have tension headaches! (Bonus: I like using one hand to massage my temples while holding my cell phone in my other hand—just call someone who makes you feel relaxed!)
